Bringing together two days of virtual courses taught online, with a capstone third day onsite, presented with the Charleston Conference Asia in Bangkok, Thailand, January 2026

We are pleased to announce that the FORCE11 Scholarly Communication Institute (FSCI) will host a series of courses for attendees of the Charleston Conference Asia. Courses will begin in the week prior to the conference, offering two online sessions, followed by a final session held in-person at the Charleston Conference, in Bangkok, Thailand, on 25 January 2026.

We seek volunteer instructors from the FORCE11 and the Charleston Communities. Have you learned a valuable skill set useful to your fellow colleagues in scholarly communication? We urge you to develop a course proposal and submit it for consideration.

The last session of the course will take place in person in Bangkok, and so we require that one of the instructors will be available to instruct that session in person. FSCI will provide travel support for one instructor per course.

Running since 2017, FSCI provides a platform for professionals to gain education and build capacity in key areas of scholarly communication. FSCI courses provide practical training on a particular aspect of scholarly communications, while paying attention to the broader issues at play. FSCI courses may also explore emerging trends, challenges, and possible solutions. Please help us get the word out to your colleagues in research and scholarly communication by sharing this information with your network. We greatly appreciate your ongoing assistance in helping FSCI to develop and grow.

• We invite proposals by new instructors as well as returning FSCI courses and instructors.
• Courses should incorporate practical tools as a way to illustrate key concepts. Proposals that are solely tutorials for a single platform or tool are discouraged. 

Call for Courses for FSCI 2026 

If you are a member of the FORCE11 community, or otherwise involved in the scholarly communication landscape, you likely have experience or skills in research communication methods, open research practices, and/or innovation in scholarly dissemination. Help your community of practice by sharing what you’ve learned in a FSCI course. The global community of FSCI attendees consists of researchers, librarians, administrators, publishers, and support staff across the research-communication lifecycle. Join our group of volunteer instructors and learners at the immersive, community-led FSCI, which is welcome to all and presented by the FORCE11 community in collaboration with the Charleston Conference Asia.

We ask people to also keep in mind the priorities of the Charleston Conference. While you don’t need to fit into any of these perfectly, it can help you understand the types of content we are seeking.

Submission deadline: Monday, June 16th, 2025 

The first two Virtual sessions of your course will be conducted during the week of January 19th. Your final course session will be conducted in-person on Sunday, January 25th, the day before Charleston Asia begins. FSCI will provide travel support for one instructor per course.

• Courses will meet 3 times, with sessions usually between 1 and 3 hours long – for a total of 3-9 hours of course time. 
• Each course will meet for sessions 1 and 2 via Zoom, with instructor-directed scheduling flexibility during this week. 
• Session 3 will be held in person, but also conducted on Zoom to allow for virtual attendees
• We shall offer courses that leverage the hybrid online and in-person participation, to engage communities of researchers and professionals both globally and in the Asian region.
