| Biography | Rowan Cockett is a founder Curvenote, a platform that helps with scientific writing and integrations into computational notebooks (e.g. Jupyter). We are tackling ideas around reproducibility, educational resources, and reuse of open content and knowledge. Excited about Open Access and Open Science. Rowan has a PhD in computational geophysics from the University of British Columbia, he researched a numerical framework aimed at increasing quantitative communication in the geosciences developed through his studies on numerical geophysics, subsurface flow, and structural geology. In 2014, Rowan founded 3point Science, where he developed a web-based 3D visualization product for geological modelling. 3point got noticed quickly in the geotech community and was acquired in 2016 by Seequent, a global geoscience software company. Rowan then led Seequent’s cloud team, helping bring a cloud-based version control system for geologic modelling to market. During his PhD, Rowan was a Vanier Scholar (top 2 nationally in Canada), a Killum Laureate, and was awarded the top national doctoral prize for interdisciplinary research. He won multiple awards for innovative dissemination of research and presentations of educational material, including a geoscience modelling application, Visible Geology, that has been used by more than a million geoscience students to interactively explore conceptual geologic models. In 2018, he was awarded an early career achievement award from the University of Calgary for his contributions to geophysical research, geoscience education, and his entrepreneurship. |
