aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1201\"><h3>A revolution in research communication<\/h3><p>The ecosystem of scientific and scholarly communication continues to traverse a generational disruption,\u00a0largely driven by the growing need and expanded ability to generate and disseminate large amounts of data, analyses, and outcomes. These changes affect\u00a0every aspect of scholarly activity and research across all domains and disciplines, with emerging forms of publication, evolving standards and expectations, and expanding ways of measuring and demonstrating success. Our community and our goals continue\u00a0to develop within our scientific research infrastructure, demanding increasingly open and transparent processes and outcomes of scientific and scholarly activities. Increasingly, an ever-evolving communications skill set is required for researchers and knowledge workers that inhabit that ecosystem, in addition to their disciplinary expertise.<\/p><h3>FSCI \u2013 Virtual and In-person<\/h3><p>The\u00a0FORCE11 Scholarly Communication Institute\u00a0(FSCI) was conceived in 2017 as a platform to bring together the expertise of the globally diverse FORCE11 (The Future of Research Communication and eScholarship;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.force11.org\">www.force11.org<\/a>) community to address this continuing need for knowledge transfer and skills training at a high level. Organized by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/force11.org\/fsci\/post\/fsci-team-contacts-2022\/\">FORCE11 community members<\/a>\u00a0in collaboration with the UCLA Library, FSCI assembles researchers, scholars, librarians, publishers, funders and research administrators to explore new developments in open science, knowledge creation and communication. \u00a0FSCI courses range from basic orientations to advanced topics parsed by different domains\/disciplines, with the goal to foster community-driven understanding and solutions for the latest trends, technologies, and opportunities that are transforming the way science and scholarship is conducted and communicated. Researchers \u201creturn home\u201d from the summer institute with important skills training \u2013 but more broadly, are newly equipped with ideas, tools, and tactics for instigating change in their disciplines and at their institutions.<\/p><h3>Who should attend?<\/h3><p>FSCI is intended for anybody who is interested in the evolving world of scholarly communication: researchers, librarians, publishers, university and research administration, funders, students, and postdocs. There are courses for those who know very little about the current trends and technologies, as well as courses for those who are interested in more advanced topics. Our courses cover scholarly communication from a variety of disciplinary and regional and national perspectives. We have courses that will be of interest to the scientist, the social scientist, and the humanities researcher. There are courses for those who manage, organize, and publish research as well as for the researchers themselves and end-users.<\/p><h3>About FORCE11<\/h3><p>FORCE11 is a community of scholars, librarians, archivists, publishers and research funders that arose organically to study and facilitate new developments in knowledge creation and communication. In its short history, it has already had an outsized impact on the practice of Open and FAIR scholarly communication, facilitating community work on such impactful initiatives as the Data Citation and FAIR data principles. The response:<\/p><ul><li><em>&#8220;I chose to attend FSCI2024 because of its unique and timely courses, which aligned perfectly with my commitment to advancing open research infrastructure. The courses on open research infrastructure and AI policy matched my research interests and institutional goals. Moreover, it provided an opportunity to engage with global community-driven programs and initiatives.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li><em>&#8220;FSCI surpassed my expectations; I came away energized and even more radicalized in a sense, mainly because there was a strong sense of enthusiasm and optimism that so many of the challenges we&#8217;ve been trying to address for the last 15+ years are gaining some traction at higher levels. I learned so much and am coming back to my institution with several ideas to implement&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li><em>&#8220;Though it was a small crowd this year, I enjoyed the same camaraderie that I&#8217;ve experienced at previous FSCIs. I enjoyed seeing people from previous FSCIs and meeting new people, especially the attendees from other countries.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li><em>&#8220;The content &#8211; 110% -it was fantastic. Workshops and group sessions went way beyond my expectations &#8220;<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cBeing the first in-person FSCI event since the pandemic, it was valuable for reconnecting and also for the opportunity to learn something new that could complement or even shift my work or career expectations.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>&#8220;Despite the unexpectedly intimate experience, or perhaps because of it, I found that the opportunities to converse with schol comm professionals exceeded my expectations.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cIt exceeded my expectations. I honestly did not know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by the level of engagement with the partcipants of FSCI both in my course and others at the event.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li><em>&#8220;Attending the programme exceeded my expectations by providing invaluable knowledge, tools, and networks to drive meaningful change within my community, promote open scholarship practices, and develop effective governance policies for AI in scientific research. The response:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;The community at FSCI is really engaged, and the course materials are better than any other online training course I&#8217;ve attended. The content was matched well with the available time, and the instructors were extremely supportive and helpful. It was a great learning environment, for just the right amount of time!&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;I am currently based in Japan and am looking to expand my experience and network so that I can find work elsewhere. To this end, I am getting myself up-to-date with current trends in publishing&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;I do collection assessment, and have been looking for ways to incorporate publishing output data in my work without having to reinvent it for myself&#8211;and I got two new ways of doing it via the courses I took.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;The courses are innovative and I never attend such courses in India or other east part of the world&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;I wanted to know more about how I can help in analyzing the scholarly works of our faculty members and situate the library&#8217;s position in the research process. I know that FSCI is a good venue to learn these things from experts around the globe.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;This was my first FSCI conference &#8211; I&#8217;m new to scholarly communications and this experience really helped me broaden my view of the field.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;I learned just enough basic R to be dangerous, and how to interact with APIs via OpenRefine and code to gather the data I need to step up the collections assessment work I do, particularly with journal publishing, big deals, and read &amp; publish agreements.&#8221;:<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;I found the session on AI in scholarly communication very enlightening. The response:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;FSCI fully met my expectations. I was able to immediately apply what I learned in work meetings that I had later in the day. I also find the presentations and related content very timely.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;Research Data Management is an emerging area, particularly in a developing country like Pakistan. My participation will help me to organize workshops for researchers and librarians in the upcoming weeks and months to introduce RDM to the researchers and librarians in Pakistan.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;The workshops allow for participation, both hands-on work and discussion, that&#8217;s much more useful than listening to presentations.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;The courses exceeded my expectations. It was great learning from teams who are experts in their area. The opening and closing keynotes were excellent and inspiring.&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><em>&#8220;FSCI always delivers great short courses, with expert instructors who bring personal excitement to every topic. There&#8217;s no other Institute or learning experience like FSCI! It was very immersive and I came away with a much richer understanding of scholarly communication. It was a great learning environment, for just the right amount of time!&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;I am currently based in Japan and am looking to expand my experience and network so that I can find work elsewhere. To this end, I am getting myself up-to-date with current trends in publishing&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;I do collection assessment, and have been looking for ways to incorporate publishing output data in my work without having to reinvent it for myself&#8211;and I got two new ways of doing it via the courses I took.&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;The courses are innovative and I never attend such courses in India or other east part of the world&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;I wanted to know more about how I can help in analyzing the scholarly works of our faculty members and situate the library&#8217;s position in the research process. I know that FSCI is a good venue to learn these things from experts around the globe.&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;This was my first FSCI conference &#8211; I&#8217;m new to scholarly communications and this experience really helped me broaden my view of the field.&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;I learned just enough basic R to be dangerous, and how to interact with APIs via OpenRefine and code to gather the data I need to step up the collections assessment work I do, particularly with journal publishing, big deals, and read &amp; publish agreements.&#8221;:<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;I found the session on AI in scholarly communication very enlightening. The response:<\\\/p><ul><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;FSCI fully met my expectations. I was able to immediately apply what I learned in work meetings that I had later in the day. I also find the presentations and related content very timely.&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;Research Data Management is an emerging area, particularly in a developing country like Pakistan. My participation will help me to organize workshops for researchers and librarians in the upcoming weeks and months to introduce RDM to the researchers and librarians in Pakistan.&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;The workshops allow for participation, both hands-on work and discussion, that&#8217;s much more useful than listening to presentations.&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;The courses exceeded my expectations. It was great learning from teams who are experts in their area. The opening and closing keynotes were excellent and inspiring.&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li aria-level=\\\"1\\\"><em>&#8220;FSCI always delivers great short courses, with expert instructors who bring personal excitement to every topic. There&#8217;s no other Institute or learning experience like FSCI! You have participants from the humanities, sciences, medicine, etc. all present for the topic of scholarly communication. I don&#8217;t know of another conference with that focus.\\u201d<\\\/li><li>\\u201cTaking courses from experts in the field. Thinking about big picture issues. Reasonably priced. Virtual so anyone can attend. International perspectives. Very collaborative.\\u201d<\\\/li><li>\\u201c&#8230;[P]ersonally, the informal way of delivering the sessions, keeping the topics as current as possible and opening up a platform for professionals to have fruitful discussions are the best things about FSCI.\\u201d<\\\/li><li>\\u201cThe global diversity is key &#8211; I&#8217;ve never had an experience that is this wide ranging.\\u201d<\\\/li><li>\\u201cIn each class there is an abundance of useful materials and practical discussions rooted in advancing the way we push scholarship forward.\\u201d<\\\/li><li>\\u201cAn Institute with a focus on skill building and building a community of scholarly communications professionals.\\u201d<\\\/li><li>\\u201cThe amount of work that went into networking and socializing. It was very immersive and I came away with a much richer understanding of scholarly communication. Part of this was down to the incredible opportunity to share learnings with those from diverse settings, both geographically and academically. I gained practical skills in reproducibility and advocacy, as well as a better understanding of OA in my context. I was inspired by the work and projects of more experienced advocates, which motivated me to explore different ways of advocating for OA, from being more open in conversations with my peers to giving workshops. I am very thankful for the opportunity of attending FSCI.&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li><em>&#8220;At the FSCI 2019, I\\u00a0met many experts and fellow professionals who have helped me to gain new skills and knowledge in some areas of scholarly communication. I was very fortunate that all of them were very supportive, kind, and had a lot of things to share with me. They were willingly sharing their experiences and best practices in advocating open science in their respective institutions. I even still in contact with some of them. As a librarian who works in Indonesia, this such opportunity is rare.&#8221;<\\\/em><\\\/li><li><em>&#8220;Frankly, FSCI was the best ever event I have attended. And, it is very much unique in many aspects. The course contents, the classroom support, the group discussions, the freedom to choose and explore topics as per your own interest, the internal\\\/official communications provided to the participants, are just some of them that I can list out here. I would come back every year if I could, but the cost is prohibitive for me.
