Software, and in particular source code, plays an important role\u00a0in science: it is used in all research fields to produce,\u00a0transform and analyse research data, and is sometimes itself an\u00a0object of research\u00a0and\/or an output of research.\u00a0Unlike research data and scientific articles, though, software\u00a0source code has only very recently been recognised as important\u00a0subject matter in a few initiatives related to\u00a0scholarly\u00a0publication and archiving. These initiatives are now working on a\u00a0variety of plans for handling the identification of software\u00a0artifacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, unlike research data and scientific articles,\u00a0the overwhelming majority of software source code is developed\u00a0and used outside the academic world, in industry and in developer\u00a0communities where software is routinely referenced, in practice,\u00a0through methods that are totally different from the ones used in\u00a0scholarly publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The objective of this working group is to bring together a broad\u00a0panel of stakeholders directly involved in software\u00a0identification.\u00a0The planned output will be concrete recommendations for the\u00a0academic\u00a0community to ensure that the solutions that will be\u00a0adopted by the academic players are compatible with each other\u00a0and especially with the software development practice of tens of\u00a0millions of developers worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
