{"id":142866,"date":"2020-01-28T14:00:55","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T14:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/force11.org\/open-climate-knowledge-working-group\/"},"modified":"2025-02-11T16:11:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T16:11:19","slug":"open-climate-knowledge-working-group","status":"publish","type":"group","link":"https:\/\/force11.org\/group\/open-climate-knowledge-working-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Climate Knowledge Working Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ct_body\">\n<p>100% open collaborative research for climate change knowledge\u2014using data mining &amp; open science publishing | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23ock&amp;src=typed_query&amp;f=live\">#OCK<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OCKProject\">@OCKProject<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The group does much of its work via GitHub: <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/OCKProject\/Force11-OCKWG\">https:\/\/github.com\/OCKProject\/Force11-OCKWG<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Description<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-f58cae16-7fff-f4d7-7cff-a4ec24b407c3\">The climate crisis of the predicted atmosphere temperatures rising to 1.5C + makes it imperative that research related to climate change be put to better use by being open and digitally connected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-f58cae16-7fff-f4d7-7cff-a4ec24b407c3\">We are concerned with making all aspects of research open, but as an example, one analysis shows that less than 30% of research papers related to climate change are Open Access (Tai and Robinson 2018). This must change now!<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-f58cae16-7fff-f4d7-7cff-a4ec24b407c3\">We have a powerful data mining software OpenNotebook (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/OCKProject\/climate\">https:\/\/github.com\/OCKProject\/climate<\/a>) that can search open repositories using linked data dictionaries based on Wikidata. We can then retrieve metadata and documents and apply analysis with machine learning, creating: collections, repositories, develop knowledge graphs, annotate, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-f58cae16-7fff-f4d7-7cff-a4ec24b407c3\">You\u2019re welcome to join the working group \u2014 we need volunteers with many different skill sets from data scientists to designers. If you would like to find out more about the types of tasks and skills that need covering see our GitHub issue tracker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/OCKProject\/Force11-OCKWG\/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3A%22WG+Tasks%22\">#WG Tasks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-f58cae16-7fff-f4d7-7cff-a4ec24b407c3\">You can request to join the working group by signing up at the bottom of this Force11 website page.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Goals<\/h3>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:decimal\">\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-6b3c3e0a-7fff-4772-8cf6-0761b6ebaac3\">Use OpenNotebook data mining software to build open research knowledge base and demonstrate the advantages of open science publishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-6b3c3e0a-7fff-4772-8cf6-0761b6ebaac3\">Work on three climate use cases for OpenNotebook:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\">\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-6b3c3e0a-7fff-4772-8cf6-0761b6ebaac3\">scholarly communications \/ bibliometrics;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-6b3c3e0a-7fff-4772-8cf6-0761b6ebaac3\">for researchers working in institutions, and in;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-6b3c3e0a-7fff-4772-8cf6-0761b6ebaac3\">community science AKA Citizen Science areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-6b3c3e0a-7fff-4772-8cf6-0761b6ebaac3\">Develop a plan for transitioning to 100% open.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-5cfb6c0e-7fff-b8bd-4993-cd1a3893b94c\">Progress\/Activities<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type:disc\">\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-5cfb6c0e-7fff-b8bd-4993-cd1a3893b94c\">TBC. FYI, the first activities will be to enable the OpenNotebook paper data mining tool chain to be more widely usable by creating documentation and testing out installation and user workflows. In addition the formation for a committee to work on plans for \u2018transitioning climate change related research to 100% open\u2019 will be an accompanying foundational step for the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Deliverables and timeline<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type:disc\">\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-5c335a62-7fff-b04e-d5f0-740632e4d6ad\">The first working group meeting (public) will take place via Jitsi video conference platform&nbsp; (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meet.jit.si\/OCK\">https:\/\/meet.jit.si\/OCK<\/a>) on February 11th 2020, 8am PDT \/ 11am EDT \/ 4pm GMT \/ 5pm CET \u2013 duration 60 minutes. Dial in possible. This first meeting will be an open public meeting to give as many people a chance to learn about the project.
