{"id":142323,"date":"2016-05-09T15:27:14","date_gmt":"2016-05-09T15:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/force11.org\/attributes-of-an-interoperable-annotation\/"},"modified":"2022-05-26T13:46:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-26T13:46:56","slug":"attributes-of-an-interoperable-annotation","status":"publish","type":"group_pages","link":"https:\/\/force11.org\/group\/pages\/attributes-of-an-interoperable-annotation\/","title":{"rendered":"Attributes of an interoperable annotation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ct_field\"><span class=\"ct_default\"><\/p>\n<p>Summarizes results of discussions on interoperability from the Kick off Meeting.<\/p>\n<p>(The following adapted from the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1qI96mpZymeHXjuMoSX8c_8pWqdcRNPXg6atSKiQWWf4\/edit#slide=id.p15\">meeting summary by Brooks Hanson<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>An interoperable annotation layer should enable organized, connected, curated, enrichment layers for all curated online content that allows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open but standard framework that allows\/supports\/enables enrichment by community and global discovery to the extent possible.<\/li>\n<li>Granular annotations for online elements (html text, images, data, PDF, epub, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Discovery and linking of annotations across different content instances (html vs. pdf)<\/li>\n<li>Public, private, group, private group, and authoritative or branded conversations and ability to evolve permissions on selected annotations<\/li>\n<li>Selection by both content creators and users<\/li>\n<li>Common identification of private conversations<\/li>\n<li>Follow\/notification<\/li>\n<li>Classifications and endorsements, including authoritative endorsement<\/li>\n<li>Identities and management of identities among systems<\/li>\n<li>Discovery and linking of annotations across multiple versions of content&mdash;for scholarly research across multiple repositories, preprints, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Persistence as content changes\/evolves to new versions.<\/li>\n<li>Support for the notion of the &ldquo;clean page&rdquo;, letting readers choose which annotations to layer in.<\/li>\n<li>Standard identifiers and metadata that allow sharing, discovery, and connections across multiple repositories and implementations and organizing annotations for specified uses<\/li>\n<li>People identifiers within groups and globally (SSO including with ORCID), w\/ Twitter, other SM groups<\/li>\n<li>Tags that help filter, sort, identify annotations by date, relevance, topic&hellip;factual annotations vs. comments &nbsp;(pragmatic vs. true semantic interoperability)<\/li>\n<li>Consistently identified regardless of where created<\/li>\n<li>Many different clients that support basic functionality<\/li>\n<li>Rich connections to other online resources<\/li>\n<li>Portability across hosting services<\/li>\n<li>Automatic linking of other resources and discussions (e.g., Altmetrics\/Mendeley\/ResearchGate\/F1000\/PubPeer\/git\/Trellis)?<\/li>\n<li>Fully accessible (508 compliant)<\/li>\n<li>Further mining and analysis<\/li>\n<li>Automated\/programmatic annotations\/tagging\/reference annotations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ct_meta\"><span class=\"ct_label\">Archive:<\/span>&nbsp;<a class=\"ct_archive\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.force11.net\/node\/7141\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/archive.force11.net\/node\/7141<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summarizes results of discussions on interoperability from the Kick off Meeting.
