As we celebrate the 350th anniversary of the first scientific journal, we are in the midst of a profound change in how research is communicated. Paper has largely been supplanted by digital means of dissemination.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p-3\">What has not changed nearly as much, however, is the process by which research is written, adjudicated, and published. Over the past decade, a growing number of researchers have highlighted problems in our current system and questioned our adherence to practices that often arose to accommodate the limitations of print.
