Preamble<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the grand challenges of data-intensive science is to facilitate knowledge discovery by assisting humans and machines in their discovery of, access to, integration and analysis of, task-appropriate scientific data and their associated algorithms and workflows. Here, we describe\u00a0FAIR\u00a0– a set of guiding principles to make data\u00a0Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. \u00a0The term FAIR was launched at a\u00a0Lorentz workshop<\/a>\u00a0in 2014, the resulting\u00a0\u00a0FAIR principles were published<\/a>\u00a0in 2016.<\/p>\n

To be Findable:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

F1. (meta)data are assigned\u00a0a globally unique and eternally persistent identifier.<\/u>
\nF2. data are described with rich\u00a0metadata.<\/u>
\nF3. (meta)data are\u00a0registered\u00a0or\u00a0indexed\u00a0in a searchable resource.<\/u>
\nF4. metadata\u00a0specify<\/u>\u00a0the data identifier.<\/p>\n

To be Accessible:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A1 \u00a0(meta)data are retrievable by their identifier<\/u> using\u00a0a standardized communications protocol.<\/u>
\nA1.1 the protocol<\/u> is\u00a0open, free, and universally implementable.
\nA1.2 the protocol <\/u>allows for an\u00a0authentication and authorization procedure, where necessary.
\nA2 metadata are accessible<\/u>, even when the data are no longer available.<\/p>\n

To be Interoperable:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I1. (meta)data use a formal, accessible, shared, and broadly applicable language<\/u> for knowledge representation.
\nI2. (meta)data use\u00a0vocabularies\u00a0that follow FAIR principles.<\/u>
\nI3. (meta)data include\u00a0qualified references<\/u>\u00a0to other (meta)data.<\/p>\n

To be Re-usable:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

R1. (meta)data have a plurality of accurate and relevant attributes.<\/u>
\nR1.1. (meta)data are released with a clear and accessible\u00a0data usage license.<\/u>
\nR1.2. (meta)data are associated with their\u00a0provenance.<\/u>
\nR1.3. (meta)data\u00a0meet domain-relevant community standards.<\/u><\/p>\n
