{"id":141564,"date":"2013-03-09T08:45:04","date_gmt":"2013-03-09T08:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging2.simonw59.sg-host.com\/thoughts-bibliographic-management-software-productivity-tools-for-researchers-jason-rollins-2010\/"},"modified":"2022-05-26T13:41:07","modified_gmt":"2022-05-26T13:41:07","slug":"thoughts-bibliographic-management-software-productivity-tools-for-researchers-jason-rollins-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/force11.org\/post\/thoughts-bibliographic-management-software-productivity-tools-for-researchers-jason-rollins-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"[Thoughts] Bibliographic Management Software: Productivity Tools for Researchers &#8211; Jason Rollins 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ct_body\">\n<p>I recently came across the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stm-assoc.org\/events\/stm-innovations-seminar-2012\/?presentations\">STM Innovations Seminar Video Archive<\/a>&nbsp;and I figured it would provide some good food for thought as we approach <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23btpdf2&amp;src=typd\">#btPDF2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What follows are my notes and thoughts during Jason Rollin&#039;s (Thompson Reuters; EndNote, Reference Manager Dev Team) presentation &quot;Bibliographic Management Software: Productivity Tools for Researchers&quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stm-assoc.org\/events\/stm-innovations-seminar-2010\/?presentations\"> that took place in 2010.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>His Key Points:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/d7\/images\/JRollins1_700x389.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Take Home<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Help people do their work <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Workflow is essential, dont disrupt it, dont add to it &#8211; integrate within their workflow, this is KEY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) User Experience, User Interface &#8211; details are important and your customers will tell you when they dont like it.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although a self-promotion in the slide &#8211; <strong>An Ecosystem for a researcher, their world and their work is more effective than a silo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/d7\/images\/JRollins2_large.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview of History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/d7\/images\/JRollins3_700x460.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>@ 7:52 Were we are now &#8211; hybrid models (web, desktop, mobile) &#8211; the focus is less on delivery platform, less on the technology &#8211; <strong>more really on making sure these tools are seemlessly integrated into the researchers workflow.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reference Management software has not seen a significant amount of annotation &#8211; despite number of tools and software &#8211; all have same core functionality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>everyone now is focusing on the social, sharing, collaboration bandwagon &#8211; ie. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citeulike.org\/\">citeulike.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Synchronization across platforms &#8211; ie. <a href=\"http:\/\/mendeley.com\/\">Mendeley<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mobile Apps&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>APIs\/Extensions<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reference material evolving &#8211; data sets, multi-media<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Opensource, freemium, propertary, paywalls?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"ct_meta\"><span class=\"ct_label\">Archive:<\/span>&nbsp;<a class=\"ct_archive\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.force11.net\/node\/4311\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/archive.force11.net\/node\/4311<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently came across the STM Innovations Seminar Video Archive&nbsp;and I figured it would provide some good food for thought as we approach #btPDF2.
